The 5 types of internet connections, explained without jargon
Fiber, cable, 5G home internet, DSL, and satellite — what's actually different, what speeds to honestly expect, and which one fits your home. Your address usually qualifies for two or three of these; the call is where we find out which.

Data travels as light through glass strands — which is why fiber delivers the fastest, most consistent speeds available, with uploads as fast as downloads (rare and glorious). If fiber reaches your address, it's almost always the answer.

Cable internet
Runs on the same coaxial lines as cable TV, which is why it reaches most urban and suburban addresses. Fast downloads at competitive prices; uploads are slower than fiber but fine for most households.

5G home internet
Your home connects to a nearby 5G tower through a plug-in receiver — no cable run, no technician, no phone line. Setup takes minutes, plans are typically month-to-month, and it's become the breakthrough option for rural addresses and contract-averse renters alike.

DSL internet
Internet over old copper phone lines. It reaches far, but speed drops with every foot of copper between you and the exchange. If DSL is your current service, there's a decent chance a better option has arrived at your address since you signed up — worth one call to find out.

Satellite internet
A dish at your home talks to satellites overhead — which means it works nearly anywhere with open sky. Modern low-earth-orbit satellite service has transformed what's possible at truly remote addresses, though weather sensitivity and equipment costs remain part of the deal.

The Lag Machine
Latency is the round trip your click makes before anything happens. Fire a ping on each connection type and literally watch the difference. (Slowed 25× — real internet is faster than eyeballs.)

Which type should you get?
Simple: the best type available at your address, matched to how your household uses the internet. Fiber if you can get it. Cable or 5G home for most everyone else.
